1 out of every 5 students in America goes hungry. 16 million live in households who struggle from hunger – nearly 22% of kids under 18. 16 million live in poverty. When children live with a single mom it skyrockets to an incredible 36.8%!
HUNGER. most of us take it for granted that when we feel hungry...we eat…we snack…we drink…or we hope to lose weight! after all…that’s our culture. those are the images flashed before our eyes on tv, billboards and online. but every day literally millions of people and children can’t do anything about it. they stay hungry. and when they do, they get sick easily, they don’t have energy, they are not as productive, they can’t study, they don’t do well in school or at work, and yes…they suffer from malnutrition. some even turn to drugs to avoid the pangs of hunger.
the US is the one of the richest nations in the world, yet it continues to suffer with this serious hunger problem. it’s inconceivable that while millions go hungry, we are wasting about 96 billion pounds of food each year. so GMM | PDC is working on reducing both the waste and the hunger by connecting businesses that have surplus with the families, children and homeless that go hungry everyday. GMM | PDC will do all of the work…businesses will have less work and less waste….it is a win-win. we take the responsibility and the liability. why? because we believe we must. we believe it is what Christ asked us to do. and we believe that all will be blessed in the process….in GOOD MEASURE!
there are various reasons for retail and restaurant waste: over-preparing, out-grading of food, especially produce, that does not meet consumers’ expectations (blemished, oddly-shaped), un-purchased holiday foods, inadequate storage, overstocking, end-of-day overages, dented cans, damaged packaging, spillages, and bruising.
so why does the majority of this food end up in landfills? because of ignorance and fear. law suits are out of control in the US, and businesses take every precaution to avoid them. however, if businesses take steps to choose an established hunger program that will give written assurances of its training, practices and standards, not only will there be little chance of an incident occurring, but the restaurant or business will have “paper in hand” to show that it will be held harmless and that it acted in good faith under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act.
we are asking you to consider donating to GMM | PDC under a written agreement that protects you under the GOOD SAMARITAN food donation act. for more information...check out this link: http://www.usda.gov/oce/foodwaste/resources/donations.htm
